Baja 500 weekend is about to begin

May 28, 2008

Ben and Jane arrived today. I met them at the hotel after work, and we spent some time catching up before driving over to Jimmy Carter’s for some dinner. Barbara caught up with us back at the hotel.

Tomorrow, Ben and I go fishing on San Diego Bay. Daryle and Todd will arrive mid-morning, followed by the rest of the gang (Jeff, Mark, Miles, Randy and Ryan) tomorrow night.

We’ll be striking out for Ensenada on Friday after breakfast. We’ve got a leisurely trip planned with overnight in Ensenada. The big race is Saturday, then back to San Diego.

Recap to follow.

Thai Village Restaurant

May 27, 2008

Yesterday, Barbara and I accidentally stumbled upon the best little Thai restaurant we’ve been to in San Diego. We were bicycling all over and around town, and wound up in Pacific Beach at about the time I started getting cranky from low blood sugar. Casting about, looking for a place that wasn’t overrun by the chug-a-lug beach crowd PB is known for, we pulled up to the unassuming little storefront of Thai Village Restaurant. The place was small and there was one other couple eating. Some Thai pop music wafted over the speaker hanging on the wall. A small, cheerful voice emanating from the kitchen greeted us and enjoined us to have a seat. A short Thai girl came hurrying out with menus and a big smile. Our first glance at the menu alerted us that this wasn’t the usual Pad Thai blah, blah ‘bistro’ style of Thai food that is rampant in town, but something different. This was the real deal. I ordered the ‘Thai Boat’ which was a mixture of assorted steamed seafood and vegetables in a foil wrapper (kind of like a papillote) with steamed rice on the side. The girl gave me a sideways glance and tried to steer me toward a more gringo friendly stir-fry, but I held my ground. she doesn’t know me, obviously. Barbara chose a sort of Thai salad with shrimp. We also got some appetizer I can’t remember the name of (are you sensing a theme here?) made of pulverized fish, etc. and flattened into a patty. Let me just say everything was outstanding. My meal was done to perfection. All the assorted bits of seafood were tender and delicious. Barbara’s salad had big, juicy shrimp (oxymoron?) and the light dressing was different from anything we’d tasted. Everything was great and really reasonably priced, and as we were leaving, the whole staff sent us off with a hearty farewell. I think we may have found our new spot.

Whales in Baja California

May 26, 2008

Here is a clip someone in our group took a couple of years back. We were down in Baja to see the breeding ground of the gray whales. Kind of looks like the loch ness monster in this clip. It was right up next to our little boat – kind of an awesome experience.

I just figured out how to upload videos to YouTube!

May 26, 2008

It’s a really short clip taken by Ben on his camera while we were in Saigon last year. I just figured out how to post it up on YouTube. Here it is..

I’ll have to work on why I can’t see the preview.

update: I just figured out the preview thing. Score!

I Love Me a Three Day Weekend.

May 25, 2008

Three day weekends are so awesome – it’s like having two Saturdays back to back. Saturday morning, you wake up and you’re like ‘Sweet, it’s Saturday morning!’ Then on Sunday, you can wake up and do it all over again. It only gets better when the crappy, rainy forecast for the entire weekend turns into fairly decent SoCal-type weather after all.

So it’s Sunday morning and the weekend is before us again. Barbara and I have a breakfast date to meet Kendra and Alex over at Brian’s. We’ll be riding our bikes, as we have taken to doing on the weekends lately, and might just take a stroll through the farmer’s market afterwards, before toddling off to the gym. My consolation for going to the gym two days in a row will be finally going to see the new Indiana Jones flick (it’s only been out for, like, 4 days. Gaaaa.)

Anyhoo, that’s my plan. Wish me luck, y’all. Oh, and no flat tires today, no flat tires today, no flat tires…

Remember Hee Haw?

May 24, 2008

This is awesome! Brings me back to my youth – playing with my matchboxes on the rug in the living room while Mom and Dad watched Hee Haw on the TV. Good times, I’m tellin’ ya.

Honorable post number 1

What? You mean I can throw a bunch of useless crap up here for the whole world to see? The Interwebs are really cool!

Late to the party

May 24, 2008

I know that all the cool kids have probably already been here and done this, but I have finally gotten around to creating my very own WordPress blog. Don’t everybody get all excited now, I’m just a newb, so I’ll be feeling my way around this little by little. I guess the reason I haven’t done it up ’til now is that I am afraid I don’t have enough to say. Time will tell how that one works out.

In the meantime, to check out the minutia of my day to day, feel free to check me out on Twitter.

Yours truly,

J
